IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING!
Suspicious persons, vehicles or packages may or may not be indicators of a threat. However, this much is certain, when notified in a timely fashion, the police are given the best chance to assess the situation and typically allay community safety concerns.
Calling 911 is the most efficient method of reporting a suspicious situation. For the mutual benefit of both the public and the police, it is important to provide 911 with as much relevant information as possible. Citizens calling in suspicious persons, vehicles or packages should follow the below general guidelines:
Suspicious Persons
WHO: Describe the Number of Persons Gender Race/Ethnicity Age Range Height – Type of Build – Hair Color – Complexion Visible Scars/Tattoos Clothing Description – Accessories (gloves, scarf) Shoes
WHERE: If the subject is still on the scene, provide that location. If the subject is no longer there, provide the direction of flight.
WHY: Provide context and explain why a subject and/or his actions are suspicious.
Suspicious Vehicles
WHAT: As possible, describe the make/ model color – vehicle type (SUV, 2 door, hatchback, etc) – unique markings or damage number of occupants
WHERE: Provide the best possible description as to where the vehicle may be found if an address is not readily available; e.g., across the street from a school, adjacent to a vacant lot, etc.
Suspicious Packages
WHAT: Describe the package. Is it a box, a purse, a piece of pipe, a posted letter etc?
HOW: Did you see who left or delivered the package?
WHERE: Provide either an address or description of where the package is located.
WHY: If necessary, provide context and explain why the package is suspicious.
NEVER CONFRONT A SUSPICIOUS PERSON OR OCCUPIED SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE AND AVOID ANY UNNECESSARY CONTATC WITH A SUSPCIOUS PACKAGE.
