BOX 7672 WASHINGTON, DC 20044 202-566-2785(V) 202-566-1460(F) Website www.nteu280.org December 2, 2008 Board of Commissioners, Dalton Utilities 1200 V.D. Parrott Jr. Parkway P.O. Box 869 Dalton, GA 30722 Dear Commissioners: This letter was authorized by the Executive Board of the labor union representing professional employees of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters, Washington, D.C. It is in support of Mr. Wally Babb whom you fired for making a decision of conscience concerning adding hydrofluorosilicic acid to Daltons water supply. We commend Mr. Babb and his family for taking so courageous and so righteous a stand on this issue. His public statements about the impropriety of your companys actions need to be addressed by you, the city government of Dalton and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Instead of addressing his concerns, instead of allowing the citizens of Dalton to decide whether they want to add a hazardous waste to their water supplies in the face of warnings by the American Dental Association, the National Kidney Foundation and the National Research Councils Committee on Fluoride Toxicity, you chose the reprehensible and dictatorial option of trying to silence him by depriving him and his family of their livelihood. Shame on you. Shame on the CDC. Shame on the city government of Dalton. Our union has been aware of the dangers of adding this hazardous waste to drinking water supplies and of the huge financial boon it is to the phosphate industry for many years, and we have been fighting alongside citizens like the Babb family across America to stop the practice. You would be well advised and serving your clientele as they deserve to be served if you were to study closely the nature of the material Mr. Babb refuses to put into your drinking water. Even the CDCs former Fluoridation Engineer admits that arsenic contamination of many water systems is primarily due to addition of that hazardous waste. You should reinstate Mr. Babb with full back pay and benefits and a commendation. Sincerely, J. William Hirzy, Ph.D Vice-President, Chapter 280 National Treasury Employees Union EPA Professionals cc: Atlanta Journal Constitution Chattanooga Times Free Press Mr.
